Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Officers state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then located many other smeared cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they stated.
City officials announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
A high-ranking official said the incident rendered him speechless and required to be addressed promptly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
