EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
